The retired writer entered his back room and closed the door tightly, the smell of old dust filling the air. He searched for the lost manuscript of his last novel. In the center of the room stood an old wooden box he had never seen before, locked with a rusty iron padlock and no key. He gazed at the room in astonishment, wondering how the box had suddenly appeared. On top of it was a note written in his own handwriting: "Open it, and you won't regret it." His heart pounded with terror, for his handwriting was undeniable, as if he had written it himself in a future yet to come. He approached slowly, took a heavy hammer, and struck the padlock forcefully. The iron shattered, and the lid flew open, releasing an old jasmine scent he remembered from the day his wife died. Before he could reach inside, the lights in the entire house went out, and a deathly silence fell, broken only by the sound of slow footsteps climbing the wooden stairs toward his room. His blood ran cold as he looked at the doorknob, which began to turn very slowly, with a terrifying creak as if someone were opening it from the outside. The door opened very slowly, and inside the room, he saw a dark shadow that was exactly his own, but it smiled wickedly while he stood frozen with terror and astonishment. And the fatal surprise that made him realize suddenly and in utter shock that he wasn't the real person standing there, but merely a shadow of a story that ended before it began, and that the true author of the story was now writing his own end very slowly on paper, and tears of regret streamed uselessly down his cheeks, plunging the room into an absolute, endless darkness. Eternity loomed on the horizon with all its terrifying, frightening, and captivating mystery, reaching the very limits of suspense, creativity, and perpetual wonder. So who is the killer and who is the victim in this impossible game that never ends, between absolute reality and imagination, now completely unhindered.
